Exponential Decay Definition and Function

In mathematics, exponential decay describes the process of reducing an amount by a consistent percentage rate over a period of time. It can be expressed by the formula ya(1-b)x  wherein y is the final amount, a is the original amount, b is the decay factor, and x is the amount of time that has passed. The exponential decay formula is useful in a variety of real world applications, most notably for tracking inventory thats used regularly in the same quantity (like food for a school cafeteria) and it is especially useful in its ability to quickly assess the long-term cost of use of a product over time. Exponential decay is different from  linear  decay  in that the decay factor relies on a percentage of the original amount, which means the actual number the original amount might be reduced by will change over time whereas a linear function decreases the original number by the same amount every time. It is also the opposite of exponential growth, which typically occurs in the stock markets wherein a companys worth will grow exponentially over time before reaching a plateau. You can compare and contrast the differences between  exponential growth and decay, but its pretty straightforward: one increases the original amount and the other decreases it. Elements of an Exponential  Decay Formula To start, its important to recognize the exponential decay formula and be able to identify each of its elements: y a (1-b)x In order to properly understand the utility of the decay formula, it is important to understand how each of the factors is defined, beginning with the phrase decay factor—represented by the letter b  in the exponential decay formula—which is a percentage  by which the original amount will decline each time. The original amount here—represented by the letter a  in the formula—is the amount before the decay occurs, so if youre thinking about this in a practical sense, the original amount would be the amount of apples a bakery buys and the exponential factor would be the percentage of apples used each hour to make pies. The exponent, which in the case of exponential decay is always time and expressed by the letter x, represents how often the decay occurs and is usually expressed in seconds, minutes, hours, days, or years. An Example of Exponential Decay Use the following example to help understand the concept of exponential decay in a real-world scenario: On Monday, Ledwith’s Cafeteria serves 5,000 customers, but on Tuesday morning, the local news reports that the restaurant fails health inspection and has—yikes!—violations related to pest control. Tuesday, the cafeteria serves 2,500 customers. Wednesday, the cafeteria serves only 1,250 customers. Thursday, the cafeteria serves a measly 625 customers. As you can see, the number of customers declined by 50 percent  every day. This type of decline differs from a linear function. In a linear function, the number of customers would decline by the same amount every day. The original amount (a) would be 5,000, the decay factor (b ) would, therefore, be .5 (50 percent written as a decimal), and the value of time (x) would be determined by how many days  Ã¢â‚¬â€¹Ledwith wants to predict the results for. If Ledwith were to ask about how many customers he would lose in five days if the trend continued, his accountant could find the solution by plugging all of the above numbers into the exponential decay formula to get the following: ​ y 5000(1-.5)5 The solution comes out to 312 and a half, but since you cant have a half customer, the accountant would round the number up to 313 and be able to say that in five days, Ledwith could expect to lose another 313 customers!

The banking sector in India has undergone a rapid transformation. Almost a decade ago this area was limited to nationalized banks and cooperative. Then came the multinational banks, but were these limited to serve small elite.  One could consider the past as the Middle Ages in the banking sector, in which each branch of the same bank acted as independent information silo and multichannel banking (ATMs, Net Banking, tele-banking, etc) was almost nonexistent. The main reason for this first transformation is due to improved methods developed encryption security and Internet. The second reason is that banks do not want to lose a potential market share for banks that are quick to offer their Internet services. The objective of this research is just comparing the modern era banking system with the old one. The evolution of modern banking technology began with the use of advanced machines shipping Ledger (ALPM) in the 1980s. The Reserve Bank of India, which is a central policy under which several public sector banks, financial institutions, NBFCs etc. working in India had advised then all banks to go massive computerization branch level. Two options were raised i. e. either to automate the front office or office. Many banks opted for ALPM office automation in the first phase. Banks as State Bank of India, a public sector commercial bank, focused on automating back office in branch level. The Rangarajan Committee 1985 report said the banks had to get computerized. The second wave of development called for Total Bank Automation (TBA) in late 1980. This automated both the front-end and back-end operations within the same branch. TBA compound total automation of a particular branch with its own database. In the third wave, the new private sector banks entered the field. These banks have opted for a different model of having one central database instead of having multiple databases for all branches. This was possible thanks to the availability of good network infrastructure. In the beginning of the 1990s, the cost of the leased line goes down. The DoT was expanding its capacity and new technologies were being implemented. Earlier, banks were unsure of directing the whole operation through a single data center. However, when a couple of private sector banks implemented efficiently, other banks began to show interest, and also began consolidating their databases in a single database [8]. Banks follow this movement by choosing appropriate application software that supports centralized operations. The fourth wave began with the evolution of ATM delivery channel. This was the first stage of training the client for their own transactions. The second stage was Suvidha experiment in the city of Bangalore in India. This showed the power of technology and how the scope can be increased at a rate unusually large. Seeing this, all banks began to renew their retail distribution channels. Their main focus became the number of customers they can service at a lower cost. The main channels are chains such as Internet banking and mobile banking. After this came alliances for payment through different gateways. The third major event happening now is the real time gross settlement system of the RBI. Once this is in place, transactions between banks can be done through the settlement system, online, electronically. So collections will become very fast. Within five years, most transactional services are provided by way of the Internet. Net-based banking takes only 10 percent of the operating costs of conventional banking practices and services. Because banks will play a key role in terms of public services related to electronic money transactions we feel that cooperative banks NET-Banking should consider in a big way. De-regulation efforts led many financial institutions (such as HDFC and ICICI) and non-financial institutions entering the field of banking. Multi-channel banking gained importance. Emma Essay Although the story of Jane Austens Emma is centralised around the journey of her heroine who grows to maturity as she gains insight into her human follies, there are many other important themes and concepts which underlie the novel. Through this novel Austen provides an examination and insight into the class system of her era and challenges the preconceived attitudes of the conventions of society. Through her satire and irony Austen criticizes and mocks the manner in which high class society operates. Her intention was to create a microcosm of her own society by presenting the novel in her perspective within the small community of Highbury, by concentrating on this one small community Austen is able to focus and gain insight of her characters which she depends on as a driving force for the novel. It is through the actions and mannerisms of her characters that enables Jane Austen to criticize her own society, thus forcing the responders to question the significance of the issues found within her society. The main story underlying the novel follows the journey of a young woman as she matures as a result of the consequences of her human follies. Emma begins as a na?e young woman whose vanity, over bearing confidence and arrogance blind her from the truth; â€Å"Better be without sense, than misapply it as you [Emma] do? However, through her errors, misjudgments and inability to judge others Emma learns to recognise these faults and reforms her character accordingly. She gains insight from her follies and ultimately, with the aid of Mr. Knightley, she increases her awareness to others and learns the importance of insight and compassion. Emma’s arrogance and snobbery are established within the opening paragraphs of the novel; â€Å"lived nearly twenty-one years in the world with very little to distress of vex her?and with the statement; â€Å"the real evils indeed of Emma’s situation were the power of having rather too much her own way and a disposition to think a little too well of herself?Jane Austen establishes the main underlying concept of her novel. Here Emma does not perceive the follies in her mannerisms and thus establishes the arrogant, snobbish character whom, even Jane Austen ventures to admit; â€Å"no one but myself will much like? However, Emma’s arrogance and over confidence is shown to stem from the way in which she is treated within society, especially through her father’s ideology of her. Mr. Woodhouse was an indulgent father who could not find any faults within Emma; â€Å"Mr. Knightley, in fact was one of the few people who could see faults in Emma†¦and though this was not particularly agreeable to Emma herself, she knew it would be much less so to her father, that she would not have him really suspect such a circumstance as her not being thought perfect by everybody? As a result of Mr. Woodhouse’s ideology of her he fuels Emma’s confidence and arrogance by offering no criticism of her character, he saw Emma as having no faults, thus relieving his necessity to reprimand her behaviour. And so it is the combination of her wealth, status among the society of Highbury and her father’s unyielding belief of her perfection, which become the core of Emma’s vanity, arrogance and snobbery. Thus Jane Austen establishes that Emma is not entirely at fault for her conduct, because it was the society she lived in and her upbringing, which shaped her character; she did not perceive or comprehend the extent of her follies because the majority of the community was not at the position to criticize a person of Emma’s status, and so the only person who did criticize her was Mr. Knightley. However, Emma’s lack of insight and pride prevent her from seeing the wisdom within his criticisms which only delay her growing process. It is not until the Box Hill incident, when Mr. Knightley reprimands Emma’s behaviour that she really notices the truth in his criticisms, previously Emma had taken his judgments with a flippant attitude and either diverted away from the conversation or senselessly argued against his comments. This is depicted within chapter 8 when Mr. Knightley and Emma discuss the situation regarding Robert Martin’s proposal to Harriet. Emma, arrog antly assumes that Harriet is the daughter of a gentleman and is therefore higher in status than Mr. Martin; â€Å"Mr. Martin is a very respectable young man, but I cannot admit him to be Harriet’s equal; and am rather surprised indeed that he should have ventured to address her? However, Mr. Knightley opposes Emma’s theory and goes on to state that Mr. Martin is â€Å"much her superior in sense and situation? Unlike Emma, Knightley recognises the reality of the situation; â€Å"Your infatuation with the girl blinds you? he realises that Emma’s matchmaking scheme will falter because he acknowledges that Mr. Elton is â€Å"not at all likely to make an imprudent match? and in marrying an illegitimate â€Å"daughter of somebody?it would certainly degrade Mr. Elton’s position. The blindness presented by Emma here, is indicative of the result of her follies; her arrogance blinds her from the truth and her obstinacy prevents her from accepting Mr. Knightle y’s points of criticism. Emma’s growth and transition in character lies mainly in the transformation of her attitude towards others and towards herself. The change in Emma’s attitude is seen most clearly through her treatment and judgment of the Bates? Because of Emma’s situation within Highbury she was expected to visit the less fortunate members of society, and although Emma did visit the Bates?her attitude towards them suggested that her visits were an obligation; â€Å"none were equal to counteract the persuasion of its being very disagreeable- a waste of time ?tiresome women- and all the horror of being in danger of falling in with the second rate and third rate of Highbury? With this comment, Emma shows her lack of compassion and snobbery towards these people who were so much less fortunate than she was; â€Å"She is poor; she has sunk from the comforts she was born to; and if she live to old age, must probably sink more? It is this flaw in Emma which degrades the reader’s perception of her; Emma had the wealth and the status and just by visiting the Bates?she gave them great joy; â€Å"I am sure there is nobody’s praise that could give us so much pleasure as Miss Woodhouse’s? However, Emma does present a genuine interest in the Bates when she comments about â€Å"the distresses of the poor were as sure of relief from her personal attention and kindness, her counsel and her patience, as from her purse†¦always gave assistance with as much intelligence as good-will? but it is not the fact that Emma does not care about the less fortunate, it is the depth in which she cares for them which shows a shallow attitude towards the underprivileged. At this point Emma shows her superficiality in her care for the poor when her concerns quickly revert from the less fortunate; â€Å"These are the sights, Harriet to do one good. How trifling they make everything else appear!? to the situa tion concerning the matchmaking of Harriet and Mr. Elton. Emma’s lack of consideration and respect towards the Bates is shown when she arrogantly mocks Miss Bates by stating; â€Å"Ah! Ma’am, but there may be great difficulty. Pardon me- but you will be limited as to number- only three at once? However, once again, it is not until Mr. Knightley directs Emma to her follies does she realise the extent of her insolence; â€Å"How could you be so unfeeling to Miss Bates? How could you be so insolent in your wit to a woman of her character, age, and situation but rather than flippantly disregarding Mr. Knightley’s remonstration it is here that Emma begins to turn away from her arrogance and pretentiousness towards a deeper understanding of respect and worth. It is the incident at Box Hill which catalyses Emma’s transformation in attitude and character. By reflecting upon her errors she gains insight from her past follies; acknowledging her past errors and misjudgments and finally recognizing the flaws in her character. Her inability to see the truth of her own and other people’s situation creates the ironic tone of the novel, this is done mainly through the many misjudgments and errors made by Emma as a result of her interference with no insight into the situation. As a consequence of Emma’s arrogance and ass urance of her virtuosity, she manipulates situations and incidents to suit her whims. This is shown through Emma’s manipulation of the situation with Mr. Elton, despite the warnings from Mr. Knightley that Mr. Elton will not make an imprudent match, Emma still attempts to match Harriet and Mr. Elton; â€Å"She thought it would be an excellent match; and only too palpably desirable, natural, and probable, for her to have much merit in planning it? However, Emma’s attempts prove to be in vain when it becomes apparent that Mr. Elton’s affections are towards Emma; â€Å"he seems to have a great deal of good-will towards you?but as Emma’s arrogance continues to blind her she ironically muses â€Å"of the blunders which often arise from a partial knowledge of circumstances, of the mistakes which people of high pretensions to judgment are forever falling into? The character of Emma, herself, is a criticism of the high-class people of Austen’s era, Emma’s arrogance, pride and ignorance present a superficial quality of the people in Jane Austen’s time. And although Austen provides a flippant and humorous tone throughout the novel, her intentions were to ridicule the existing conventions of her society, especially the social values and structure of the community. Within Emma, Austen creates a world, which is very much influenced by wealth and status, reflecting the relative importance of wealth and status during her time of existence. In Emma, wealth was so important that it affected the relationships between people, this is inextricably shown through Mr. Elton’s choice to marry Augusta because she had 10, 000 pounds, rather than Harriet whom even Mr. Knightley admits â€Å"has some first rate qualities, which Mrs. Elton is totally without? Austen creates a society where wealth and material possessions dictates status and class, and ultimately their respectability in other people’s point of view. The elite upper classes of society were determined by property ownership, prestige was governed by heritage and inheritance, with the family name determining stature within society. This is shown through the depiction of the Coles who, despite having wealth, do not maintain a high stature within the society of Highbury; â€Å"The Cole s were very respectable in their way, but they ought to be taught that it was not for them to arrange the terms on which the superior families would visit them? Austen establishes the behavior between these different classes through Emma’s treatment of Mr. Robert Martin, where, throughout the novel she treats him with little respect or compassion simply because of his position within society; â€Å"A degree or two lower, and a creditable appearance might interest me†¦But a farmer can need none of my help, and is therefore in one sense as much above by notice as in every other he is below it? Social behaviour and etiquette are valued as an indication of status and prestige, family wealth and background are depicted as an essential requirement for a prominent position in the social hierarchy. However not all characters ascribe to the same social standings as many of the society. Mr. Knightley, although acutely aware of his material circumstances and the situation of others, shows a modest amount of concern to adhere to the conventions of high society, his friendship with Robert Martin and his high regard for him demonstrate his la ck of concern in falling to the ranks of â€Å"second or third rate?society. Austen ends the novel with a notion depicting the strength of social values over personal integrity, when Emma states that â€Å"The intimacy between her [Harriet] and Emma must sink; their friendship must change into a calmer sort of good will; and unfortunately, what ought to be, and must be, seemed already beginning, and in the most gradual and natural manner?it shows that the power of social values is not easily over run; the elite must remain among the elite and the lower society must remain below those of high society. By placing emphasis on wealth and social values and mocking those who belong within it, Austen points out that material worth should not be the highest priority within society and urges the responder to look beyond the superficiality of wealth and status. Blake Being a Man of His Time William Blake was born in 1757, the third son of a London tradesman who sold knitwear (hosier). Blake lived in London which dominated much of his work. He was a British poet, painter, and engraver, who illustrated and printed his own books. He spent most of his life in relative poverty. He was very influenced by his brother’s death which he claimed he saw "ascend heavenward clapping its hands for joy" who died of consumption at the age of 20. Blake was tuned to the huge social and political forces of the late 18th century. This can be seen in Blake’s poem ‘The Tyger’ as he uses two symbols of revolution; French Revolution and the Industrial Revolution which both happened in the 18th century! The title ‘The Tyger’ is a symbol which was used in 18th century newspapers, similar to Blake’s symbolic description of the French Reign of Terror. The ‘Times’ newspaper talked about the Reign of Terror as a Tyger: â€Å"a tiger stalking the streets of Paris†. This ‘Tyger’ was used to symbolize the power, machinery, evil, violence and energy of the revolutions going on at this time. The description ‘Tyger Tyger burning bright’ is a pun because ‘burning’ could be seen to represent destructiveness whilst ‘bright’ is a deep, powerful word for revolution. In the third line ‘What immortal hand or eye, Could frame thy fearful symmetry?’ which has a questioning tone, means that Blake is awestruck on what kind of God would want or allow the French Revolution. In the second verse which talks about Satan’s energy, it starts with a questioning tone about heaven or hell ’deeps or skies’. The question ‘Burnt the fire of thine eyes’ is addressed towards Lucifer (the Devil). Verse two and three shows the imagery of the industrial revolution ‘In what furnace was thy brain’. Blake says God is a blacksmith who wrestles with power and energy which is beneficial and at the same time destructive. In the fifth verse: ‘When the stars threw down their spears And water’d heaven with their tears: Did he smile his work to see? Did he who made the Lamb make thee?’ This is saying that if there were only good and no evil, there would be no good because there would be no comparison to what is good and what’s not. Although women in the 1950’s and today have dealt with similar stereotypes, today life has greatly improved because women aren’t as pressured to get married, are taken more seriously in the business world, and are even making as much or more money as men.One reason daily life has greatly improved for women today is because women aren’t as pressured to get married now. In the 1950’s most women married after high school and fell into their traditional roles right away. The U. S. marriage rate was at an all-time high and couples were tying the knot, on average, younger than ever before. Getting married right out of high school or while in college was considered the norm. Now, studies show American women are waiting longer than ever to get married. The average age at first marriage hit a record high of 24. years old in 1994, up from 20 years old in the mid 1950’s. That’s the oldest age since the Census Bureau started asking about the age at marriage in 1890. There are also many changes in today’s families; fewer women staying at home, fewer children born to families, and more women in college. Now men are able to stay home with the kids and become a â€Å"stay-at-home dad† while the woman â€Å"brings home the bacon†. Secondly, life has improved for women today because now women are taken more seriously in the business world.In the 1950's, the fact that a woman was even attending college was uncanny and paranormal, and the few brave women that chose to learn further were not taught mathematics and science (fields they were later going to succeed in) but home economics and cooking. Additionally, during the 1950’s, because housekeeping and raising a family were considered ideal female roles, only two out of five women with husbands and school-age children worked outside the home. In its liquid metal form, mercury absorbs instantly into the skin; but it also has an extremely high vapor pressure, so an open container of mercury disperses the metal into the air. It sticks to clothing and is absorbed by hair and nails, so you dont want to poke it with a fingernail or wipe it up with a cloth. Mercury Toxicity Direct contact with elemental (liquid) mercury can cause irritation and chemical burns. Possible immediate effects may include dizziness, vertigo, flu-like symptoms, burning or irritation, pale or clammy skin, irritability, and emotional instability. In addition, exposure to mercury affects the central nervous system, damaging the brain, liver, kidneys, and blood. The element affects reproductive organs and can damage a fetus. Several other symptoms are possible, depending on the route and duration of exposure. Some effects of mercury contact can be immediate, but the effects of mercury exposure also may be delayed. What To Do If You Touch Mercury The best action to do if you touch mercury is to seek immediate medical attention, even if you feel fine and arent experiencing any obvious effects. How To Clean Up a Mercury Spill Mercury spills are rare but can happen if you break a mercury thermometer, thermostat, or fluorescent bulb. If that happens, youll need to dispose of the mercury and contaminated objects properly. Dont use a vacuum or a broom, since this contaminates the tools and actually spreads the mercury more than if you do  nothing. Dont flush it down the drain or throw it in the trash. Dont wash mercury-contaminated clothing. You can use a stiff sheet of paper to push the mercury droplets together to form a larger drop and then use an eyedropper to suck the one drop up or push it into a jar that you can seal with a lid. If you have them, sulfur or zinc can be sprinkled onto mercury to form an amalgam, binding the mercury into a less reactive form. The location of the houses for the initiation ceremony is usually chosen by the Maasai prophet. Emuratta (circumcision) This is the most important rite of passage among the Maasai community. This initiation is performed shortly after puberty. The actual process takes place shortly prior to sunrise where cold water is poured on the boy to make him numb. The process is performed by an elder who has experience in this job. Although the incident with Atticus preaching Aunt Alexandra's ideas made Scout feel overwhelmed, Atticus resisted Aunt Alexandra by telling Scout to f! orget what Aunt Alexandra told him to say, which reassured Scout somewhat. Females would be more mature, refer themselves to the colour pink and socialise with other girls, this is called primary socialisation. I am directly concerned with how the media affects young women within today’s society, particularly through the use of gender stereotyping within young women’s magazines, mainly through articles and advertisements. Here, the ideas and beliefs already created by the media are useful to advertisers because they are socially accepted ideologies. They know that they will influence women. It has been stated in the past that it is these media interpretations of ‘The Perfect Woman’ that have been the cause for so many women becoming increasingly pressured into looking good and so dieting, keeping fit etc. This can, in extreme cases lead to serious psychological diseases such as anorexia and bulimia, where one of the main causes has been identified as social pressure. Their androgynous waif-like figures are presented as representative of the everyday woman. In doing so the average woman in the street is forced to measure herself against an unrealistic ideal. Most models are above average height, have naturally lithe bodies and are aged between sixteen and thirty. Their image is constructed and manipulated by a predominately male homosexual industry which appears reluctant to show women as curvaceous individuals. Celebrities themselves fall foul of the dominant media representation of women. When society thinks of a family we automatically think of the nuclear family in which there is a mum, dad and often two or three children. This type is seen as the statistical norm until the 1980’s where it was considered abnormal to deviate from this ideal family type and there were characteristics that came with this which were seen as socially acceptable. Children were seen as the outcome of a loving heterosexual couple and each person i. e. the mum and dad should have distinctive roles within the family. The mother should be concerned with motherhood and household chores. The father should protect the family and be a disciplinary role model, as well as their main role being defined as the breadwinner, this meaning they often bring in the most money. The mother should be the housekeeper who attians the house and looks after the children as they grow up. A young male would grow up learning the princilpes of the father and the young female would grow up adobting the mather principles. Post modernism shows that gender is the main topic in an individual’s life as events that have occurred are directly linked to a individuals gender. Post modernism gives the individual more choice and that is the basis of post modernism, choice! The individual is more independent on their life choices; such old life ambitions of marriage and children are not compulsory but are a option that some people may seek. Unlike pre modernism and modernity where marriage and kids are ultimate goals and people automatically assume that this is the right path to follow. This gives way to new events that once were either not existent or unethical such as unisex and inter-racial marriages. It shows a deterioration of religion and supernatural belief, which leaves great division among people in identity and lifestyles. People are now working more flexible times, fashion has changed in such away that people can wear what they want, food is more oriental and music comes in a wide variety. Identity has separated into many huge groups such as social classes, ethnic group, age and gender. This leads to unrest to certain groups that want change as people now have a sense of spreading opinion and arguing their rights. Certain groups such as feminists, Marxist ideology and ageist rights. As choice and individual opinion now can be widely credited it gives chance for concern to be broadcasted such as the feminist supporters wanting females to be treated as equals among men. The first wave of feminism gave people the ideology in 1928 when they got the vote, which provoked the idea of gaining more such as the 2nd wave of feminism in the 1960’s when women burned the bra’s, this caused great reasoning between the two gender differences. Karl Marx however says that society not the individual is the important issue as that eventually the working class will soon rule society. This radical change has brought in new changes such as ‘the new man’ that is a unique gender that of a masculine and unemotional male, the new man focuses on his physical appearance and pays attention to diet, personality and self image, he is more emotional and doesn’t fit in with a patriarchy idea. As post modernism has totally effected today’s society it shows how an individual can make all the differences and how self concern and freedom is the new ideal but this idea could change and evidence suggests that it could lead to pre modernism of the old age as though it is a long term cycle of a society but critics say this is the final situation of society and the end solution is total equality among genders, races and age. This idea of choice could lead in any direction depending on current affairs within society yet time is not a important issue as this process could last a log time.
